Gish is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released in May 1991 through Caroline Records. Frontman Billy Corgan has variously described Gish as a "very spiritual album" and "an album about spiritual ascension".

The Smashing Pumpkins released their debut album on May 28, 1991 under the indie label, Caroline Records, about three months before Nirvana released their iconic album, Nevermind. Although Gish only peaked at 195 on the Billboard 200, it became a cult classic that impacted the music industry in a huge way and paved a path for the alternative rock scene in the 1990s. It’s also worth mentioning that the album quckly hit the spot on the CMJ charts, which tracks the popularity and rotation among college radio stations.

Smashing pumpkins lyrics. I AM ONE I am one as you are three Try to find my sight in your trinity Your city too poor Your city too poor Try to look for something In your city to pour over. I have gone crazy Motherfuckin' crazy I have gone --. RHINOCEROS (same as on "Gish"). BLUE Hey Blue, all your love is strange Come out with all those crazy names So true when you laugh For you, Blue.

While Nirvana was a punk band, the Smashing Pumpkins and guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan are arena rockers, co-opting their metallic riffs and epic art rock song structures with self-absorbed lyrical confessions. Though Corgan's lyrics fall apart upon close analysis, there's no denying his gift for arrangements. Like Brian May and Jimmy Page, he knows how to layer guitars for maximum effect, whether it's on the pounding, sub-Sabbath rush of "I Am One" or the shimmering, psychedelic dream pop surfaces of "Rhinoceros.

This pressing is terrible. I've had 2 with the same non-fill problem on the same tracks. Aside from that, there is a general click-and-pop problem throughout both sides. Shameful, really, for Rainbo Records to produce such a bad product. I have bought albums released in the 70's from local goodwills that sound brand new compared to this, and that was with albums that had no original inner sleeves and looked like they were left out in somebody's backyard for a while. Rainbo Records also pressed this release: Gish, which also suffers from non-fill and clicks-and-pops. I know, because I have a copy of that one, too. If you want a good pressing, you're gonna have to get the original Hut pressing or the original Caroline pressing, both from 1991. I have copies of both of those and they are the real deal.

This is an excellent reissue in terms of sound and packaging. Just beautiful.

This reissue, despite some surface noise right out of the sleeve, provides the most accurate reproduction of Gish available, beating out the remastered digital version, at least to my ears. Some tracks do sound a lot better than others, which is true of the original release as well. "I Am One" and "Siva" always sounded muddier because they are sonically dense in the loud passages, so that has not changed, and not much to be done about it from an engineering standpoint. Quieter (well, quiet in Pumpkins terms) tracks like "Rhinocerous" and "Suffer" are incredible sounding. Ditto for "Snail". My least favorite song, "Crush" actually is the best sounding track here. The packaging also, basically makes up for any shortcomings the vinyl may have. It is beautiful.

Reading the reviews, there must be something seriously wrong with the current pressings. It sounds horrible. It's littered with surface noises and pops constantly pretty much through the entire record, particularly noticeable in songs with quieter passages, which SP is known for. There are no highs to the audio at all (especially on Side A), like someone's put a lid on it. Really lifeless sounding and terribly compressed. I went through 2 copies via Amazon and they have the same issues, Spin Cleaned them, so it's definitely not an issue of dust or something superficial compromising the sound. Disappointed and sticking to digital for this one

Mine seems like it doesn't have any problems, except for a bit of noise and maybe a slight warp, but you'll get that with any record, right?

Sonic_Reducer_99 Mine seems like it doesn't have any problems, except for a bit of noise and maybe a slight warp, but you'll get that with any record, right? Any record, no. These were pressed by Rainbo, which explains why some people have problems with their copies. It's luck of the draw with lower end plants. The whole run could be messed up or some people might get lucky with a "good" copy whereas others get an off-center one with non-fill.
Precious
My copy is definitely off center, which is especially audible and very bothersome during the last tracks of side B: "Daydream" just sounds dreadful! Anyone else with the same issue?
ME
Mine is the same: Off center and warped. It is a replacement copy for another off center, warped one that I returned. *sigh*

Glad you posted that...i thought my player was on the fritz. Massively wowy toward the end of side 2...going to try and find another copy!
Tat
The sound is great, I agree with the other reviews... an excellent reissue of a fantastic album, lovin it!

I have the original Gish album from Caroline records and I bought the reissue. In comparison the reissue version is very good and true to the original version. The reissue has better bass and sounds crisp. On the original version the cymbals and guitars sound a bit more natural. Plus the sound-staging is a little better than the reissue. Mind you that I could make a direct comparison between the 2 versions of the album!! For a third / half the price of the original version you get really a very damn good reissue! Only when price is really not a issue, than get the original. If it was up to me and I wanted to buy this album. I would go for the reissue version.
Nakora
Awesome reissue, sits proudly alongside my copy reissue copy of Siamese Dream :)
Dianalmeena
Maybe it's just the copy I have, but mine, although otherwise sounding great, has a fair number of loud pops and clicks, especially on side B. Also the LP itself looks wavy? It's hard to describe, but imagine looking at your reflection in a slightly rippling stream...

A2 track is basically ruined by having a hard crack every 2 seconds. hopefully my replacement will be better.
sobolica
Sounds like a typical Rainbo pressing to me! I honestly don't know how they get away with it.
Tall
Fantastic sound. Very dynamic, excellent sound-staging. In almost every aspect this is a very fine reissue. The vinyl is superb. Absolutely destroys the original CD.
Oparae
Excellent dynamics and fidelity. Pressing quality is superb. A must have for all SP fans.
Whitegrove
This is a great repress!
Ishnllador
I think Billy just likes shiny things now since his career isn't anymore
Kagaramar
I don't understand why they changed the sleeve. Imo, a great repress should have the exact same artwork.
