Billy May produced a top 20 album, Horn a Plenty in 1961, that gave Al a mellow swing sound much like he had done with Frank Sinatra. This was followed by Trumpet and Strings with large and elaborate orchestral arrangements that only grazed the album charts. A new approach brought him to Nashville, where RCA was the country music label of note and had a very talented bunch of musicians and studio men.
Part of this set comes from Honey in the Horn, a '60s pop album featuring a big Nashville sound and vocals by the Anita Kerr singers. The other half of the reissue comes from the original Our Man in New Orleans, which finds Hirt's regular band, supported by a big swing brass section, serving up Dixieland sounds with a twist. Though it's not the CD debut for these albums, the original covers and liner notes make it a wise choice for fans as well as novices to Hirt's style.
