Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for The Family and the song was featured on their eponymous album The Family. It was later made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, whose arrangement was released as the second single from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. This version, which O'Connor co-produced with Nellee Hooper, became a worldwide hit in 1990.

Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The Family, for th. .Sinéad O'Connor

Nothing Compares 2 U Prince to stream in hi-fi, or to download in True CD Quality on Qobuz. Although Prince was never able to perform this poignant ballad on stage, which he composed in 1984 for The Family (the group and the album of the same name). Nothing Compares 2 U is still too often considered to be a song by Sinéad O 'Connor. But we must return to Prince what belongs to Roger Nelson, this is what is probably thought by the people who manage the patrimony of the musician under the tag Prince Estate.

After years of being unreleased, the original, Prince studio recording of Nothing Compares 2 U has been unveiled. The posthumous recording is nothing short of epic. On April 21, 2016, the world lost an icon. The death of Prince ranks among the most shocking in entertainment history. Part of that is because icons truly seem immortal. While the multitalented, versatile pop, rock, and R&B musician was incredibly prolific throughout his career, it’s still sad, two years later, knowing that there will be no more brand-new music from Prince Rogers Nelson, sigh

Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the week’s most notable new songs and videos - and anything else that strikes them as intriguing. This week, Prince’s original 1984 recording of a song best known as a Sinead O’Connor hit, three takes on reggaeton-pop crossover, and a Grant Green cover of a James Brown track.

Written by Prince, Nothing Compares 2 U memorably found its greatest success when it was covered by Sinead O’Connor for her 1990 album I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T GOT, but the song was first recorded in July 1984 by Prince himself. The version that the world at large got to hear first, however, was the one which emerged on the self-titled album by The Family, but since it was never released as a single, it flew under the radar for the most part and didn’t really make any waves

Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U was originally released without much fanfare in 1985 as part of the rock icon’s side project The Family, but it became a worldwide hit after Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor covered the song in 1990 on her sophomore album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. Today, Prince’s Estate released a new version of Nothing Compares 2 U featuring the late singer’s original 1984 vocals, giving fans a fresh take on the classic track. To celebrate the song’s enduring legacy, Genius is launching its latest Song Story today on Nothing Compares 2 U. The story explores Prince.

Nothing Compares 2 U was first released by the Prince-formed band The Family on their 1985 self-titled album, but it never charted. Prince, knowing the song’s potential for greatness, lent the song to singer Sinéad O’Connor in 1990, and it became a worldwide smash hit. This was but one of many songs Prince lent to other singers or specifically wrote just for them that became global hits. This was done in the summer of 1984, during the height of Purple Rain mania, so chances are Prince was mulling over including it on the Revolution’s next studio album, Around the World in a Day, but decided against it. This newly-discovered original version will soon be released as two 7″ vinyl singles-in picture disc and black vinyl formats.

Sounds Excellent for a 7 inch record! The cover looks very nice, but they didn't line the inside of the cover to prevent the record from getting scratched. Because of this, the record gets marked and a little bit scratched.
Oparae
Screwed by the estate. Released it as made on order, with t-shirt or hoodie or whatever, and now they sell the Picture disc only for 20 dollars... nothing limited anymore....
Gadar
in the aftermath it seems only the initial "bundle" was limited - not the picture disc itself, they just not communicated that detail from the beginning and play with last-minute panic of the collectors...
Jogas
Hold on to the purple vinyl. The black vinyl release will only increase the purple's value. Don't listen to others banging on about inflated prices. It's called supply and demand!!!
Frei
Very nice release! Sounds good, and looks like a CLASSIC Warner Bros. 7".Not a favorite Prince song of mine in general, but great to hear HIS version of it.
Kirizius
The pressing is great and the song is amazing. Just wish it would have been released as a 12-inch single.
Oso
Unless the price goes through the roof I don’t intend selling my copies for ten years.
Celak
Any body know how ltd this release is? 5000 ..? 10000...?
Gianni_Giant
Ah so they only made 1984 of the black vinyl as well. Didn’t know that, as I’ve not found any info on it. Knew the Purple one was 1984 but not the black. Cheers
Just_paw
There are one thousand, nine hundred and eighty four. 1984.
Nikohn
Well I personally think a lot of Prince items currently are over inflated, but I’m not about to sell my purple copy.
Bys
tomorrow the BLACK vinyl edition comes in stores: same sleeve almost same sticker... = the insane price for the purple vinyl will drop ;-)
Mojind
LOL... Bottom going to fall out on this next week. Regular unlimited black copy gets released on May 25th, 2018.
Marinara
It’s a limited edition tooBut the edition (how many) is not printed on the sticker
FireWater
Yes, please can somebody pop in to pick up a copy for me. Happy to pay you more so you could treat yourself for the trouble!I live in Yorkshire, England and getting on a plane to Minnesota is a bit tricky :-)
Forcestalker
The marketing of this product was bs. $60 for a shirt and one song? Get out of here.
jorik
no: that was the picture disc as part of a bundle with clothing. this release is the purple vinyl
Gagas
With nearly 2,000 copies available, is it just me that thinks the value of this is considerably over-inflated?
Dagdalas
I attended Celebration with my wife, so we each bought a copy. So there are 2 copies in London, U.K. and neither will be sold any time soon. Good luck finding one of the other 1980 copies :)
Direbringer
I think what is pushing it higher is that it was only available in a single location, in person only, limited to 1, etc. So even a dedicated Prince and/or record collector would have to have flown to MPLS to get it. Unlike if there were 1984 copies for sale like other RSD releases in LA/NY/Seattle/etc where if you were in line early you could get other RSD releases there, but not this. This is only in one city, and only 1 record store.
Bremar
Well, I was lucky enough to buy 2, both of them will be kept by me, and I suspect a large number of fans will do the same. Good luck finding one of the other 1982 copies :)
Buriwield
cosmicfade It's overinflated because it just came out and MOST of the copies are only in Minnesota. It will begin to fade as we move further from RSD 2018 and will dip considerably when the wide release of the black copy comes out. And the picture disc too.

staxowax If you believe the price is over-inflated please can you find a cheap copy for me? Cash waiting for you. Just as soon as I find one myself! In all seriousness, if these are mostly owned by those that attended the Paisley Park event that's a good thing, and it does mean fewer will make it onto the market. When the U2 PD release of The Blackout came out (750 issued) it was selling for £400-500 in the first few days. They are now less than half that on Discogs. I think (hope!) the same thing will happen with NC2U...

Exellent
I expect the 300 sold from Electric Fetus, particularly those on-line, will be flipped fairly quickly.
Unirtay
I agree, but how many of the 1984 copies will be resold? I'm sure a lot of buyers will hold on to theirs. It may not take long for the copies offered for sale to dry up....
