Had this two-CD set come out, or even been bootlegged, 30 years before its actual release in 2010, it would have been greeted as a revelation. Coming as it did after the official appearance of so many Doors concerts in decent fidelity on CD – more than a dozen discs' worth, in fact, from 1970 alone – it was a little harder to get worked up about these recordings from their June 6, 1970 show in Vancouver, made with two on-stage microphones on a reel-to-reel. Not because of the fidelity, which is actually pretty good, if not as state-of-the-art as some other Doors concert tapes. The album features their breakthrough single "Light My Fire" and the lengthy song "The End" with its Oedipal spoken word section. The Doors was central to the progression of psychedelic rock, and has been critically acclaimed.
The show, which featured 17-minute versions of both Light My Life and The End, has been released as a two-CD package called, appropriately enough, The Doors Live In Vancouver, 1970. For guitar fans and blues aficionados, the appearance of King on the songs Little Red Rooster, Who Do You Love (listen below), Rock.
A master clone source of the Vancouver '70 audience recording. Ray's organ doesn't come through as much as the other instruments, but everything else is very clear. All of Jim's dialogue with the audience is preserved and the show is complete except for the very beginning of "Roadhouse Blues" which is cut and the tape flip between "Rock Me" and "Who Do You Love. Albert King joins The Doors for four blues songs during the show and the band performs an extra long version of "Light My Fire" (nearly 20 minutes). All in all, a great show in terrific quality. I'm always on the look out for Doors recordings I don't have or source upgrades.
