Tanlines is an American electronic music and indie rock duo from Brooklyn, New York composed of percussionist Jesse Cohen and guitarist and vocalist Eric Emm. Their influence is drawn from various genres including pop, indie, dance and world music. Tanlines' debut album Mixed Emotions was released on March 20, 2012 and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers album chart. Tanlines' songs are represented by Downtown Music Publishing.
Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm, the two halves of the Brooklyn duo Tanlines, don’t come from studio-pop. Cohen first came to our attention as the leader of Professor Murder, a clattering and scrappy dance-punk band who figured out, like Liquid Liquid and Radio 4 before them, that postpunk sounds really good when it has a whole shit-ton of percussion; I seem to remember Cohen spending a lot of time blowing a whistle at their live shows. Emm, meanwhile, has roots that go even deeper into the underground; he was a member of the math-addled post-rock bands Don Caballero and Storm & Stress.
Mixed Emotions is about four years in the making, with Tanline's last release being in 2008, and that time lapse shows in the album's mixing and production. Most of the tracks feel paid attention to, rather than slapped together. Regardless of their commercially appealing grooves, most of the songs on this album still feel important to the artists. I loved the Tanlines EP but your reaction to this album seems to be the general consensus. As a side-note, Eric used to be a part of Don Caballero and Storm and Stress, neither of which sound anything like this! Activista anti-MTV March 28th 2012. I liked this little album.
