Spatial/Design is a music singles/eps/fan club/promo recording by CANVAS SOLARIS (Tech/Extreme Prog Metal/Progressive Rock) released in 2003 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. Camera Obscura' opens up the album as a storm of pure metal, cleverly wrapped in a scheme of dexterity and angst; still, there is some room for fusion passages (a-la Upper Extremities). Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation' preserves a very similar dynamics, this time with some clear flirtations with the standard of 80s King Crimson and Gordian Knot (the heavy side).

Canvas Solaris was a band active from 1999 to 2011 that played a complex, experimental and technically sophisticated style of instrumental metal. Even with Spatial/Design, a four-track EP, exploring the concepts contained within the song-titles and the relatively brief liner notes and diagrams (the music itself is entirely instrumental) would takes many, many hours of work. The work that has gone into thinking such things through is both admirable and awe-inspiring; I know, without boasting, that I'm of something above average intelligence, but I don't even pretend to understand most of this. I know who Derrida is (briefly), and what pi is, and so on, but it's all so beyond me that I can but admire it, as people are wont.
Spatial/Design pays little attention to mood setting and sparse atmospherics; instead, the music constantly charges forward at an intense pace rooted in some of the most astounding drum work I've ever heard. Even when the melodies slow, the drums stay consistently fast, never allowing the listener to achieve a relaxed heart beat. I've always heard great things about Canvas Solaris; I knew they were an all instrumental heavy progressive metal band with great chops, dazzling guitar work and never-ending energy. However, the last three days I have been listening to their debut EP Spatial/Design, I have to mention that I am amazed at the brilliance showcased on this 26-minute disc, and it far exceeded my expectations. This is strictly instrumental music in both emotional and cerebral impact.
